Day 2 Out of the Plains and into the Mountains

We are behind on updating our trip (lack of wifi and time 🙂 so here is Wednesday!

We woke up bright and early to leave Kansas City and made it to Fort Collins, Colorado in the late afternoon. Kevin successfully took picture of the Kansas and Colorado state lines. Way to go! Kevin has never been to Kansas for Colorado so he was really excited to see these states for the first time.

Kansas was flat. There really isn’t much in West Kansas or eastern Colorado as far as places to go or things to see. Kansas was really flat, like wow I can see to the horizon in every direction flat…which led us to play how far to the horizon(we aren’t very good at that game). The only exciting thing to see in Kansas was the world’s largest prairie dog, which was 8000 pounds concrete and you cannot see from the road!  We also saw giant wind farms and Colleen even took a picture of a dust devil, which Kevin referred to as a dust buddy!!

We read online that you would be able to see the Rocky Mountains from 100 miles away so we hoped to see the Rockies from Limón (90 miles away).  So we had the camera ready to go 100 miles outside of Denver but we experienced 70 miles of disappointment as we couldn’t see the Rockies until about 30 miles from Denver (So the 100 mile thing was False!!! At least when it’s raining in Denver). We finally saw the Rockies as we were approaching Denver. They are big (and a lot further away than they look). We also saw Horse Tooth Reservoir, which is very impressive for only being the “foothills” of the Rockies!

Thursday will be a day of R&R and exploration of Fort Collins and Rocky Mountain national park.
